Blog Post #41: Reception Theory Applied to My Documentary

I am going to apply Stuart Hall's reception theory to my documentary. I will apply it to both the entire series and the episode I am filming for my final project.

Preferred (dominant) reading: the audience agrees with the intended meaning of the media.

  • Full series: all of the things that have influenced fashion that the documentary discussed the audience agrees with and finishes the documentary with a new viewpoint.
  • My filmed episode: the audience agrees that social media has had both a negative and positive outcome on the fashion industry, and they can see it clearly.

Negotiated reading: the audience can identify the intended meaning and they decide on what pieces they agree/disagree with.

  • Full series: the audience disagrees with some parts mentioned in the episodes, but overall can see the importance of the documentary as a whole.
  • My filmed episode: they agree and disagree with certain aspects of the social media episode, whether its about overconsumption, trends, or other topics.

Oppositional reading: the audience completely rejects the meaning of the media the creator makes.

  • Full series: the audience believes that the documentary is useless and has no importance. they think that fashion is something completely different, not something that has evolved over time.
  • My filmed episode: they believe that the social media episode is completely wrong, and that social media has had no influence on fashion whatsoever. They also disagree with the issues with social media such as microtrends and fast fashion.
I applied this theory to my documentary because I wanted to analyze what different people may take in when they watch it. Some might totally agree, while others do not agree with the entire topic as a whole. It also helped me develop my audience. The audience that has a preferred or negotiated reading I want to be younger because that is the age group I'm targeting.
