Blog Post #24: Magazine Layouts for Minor Task

For my minor task where I create a magazine article advertising my documentary, I researched different templates and magazine layouts to see what is usually featured. It will also help me when I create my own page. Canva has a huge collection of templates for magazines, including fashion ones.

  • The two column text layout makes the article easier to read
  • Centered images breaks up the text visually
  • At the bottom, it lists the page number and website, which adds navigation and branding
  • The white background makes the article look professional
  • The large headline catches the readers eye
  • Symmetrical layout
Fashion magazines share some similarities with typical magazines, but they also include their own unique features. Here are some features I noticed in the fashion magazine templates that Canva has.
  • Current events in runway
  • Seasonal trends
  • Features celebrities, designers, models
  • Multiple brands are featured, especially luxury and designer brands
  • Beauty section
  • Shopping guides
  • Advice and tips
  • Advertising
  • Targeted towards women
  • Younger audience

Magazines and articles advertise documentaries and films by giving people an early look at what they’re about. They usually share behind‑the‑scenes photos, interviews, and short previews that build interest and make the project feel more personal. It hypes up the audience and gets them interested in the documentary. All of this helps more people want to watch the movie when it finally comes out.

Blog Post #8: Preliminary Exercise

I used my cat as the posed actor for my video clips. Pan: The pan shot I used was to introduce the posed actor. It could be used as suspense to slowly begin to show the subject you are recording. It also allows the audience to see the background/environment that surrounds the actor. I could use this both on people (interviews) or when showing a wider view of a scene in my documentary.   Zoom: The zoom has a similar effect as the close up shot because it is showing my actor's expressions and close up details. It can also be used for the background/environment. It also makes the audience pay attention to a certain aspect you want because it is directing their attention to something. Close Up: A close up shot on actors is used to show their expressions and emotions. Because I used it on my cat, you could clearly see her expressions and the details of her face. This could be a good camera shot to use in a nature documentary to show close up details that you want the audience to notice....

Documentary M odes Expository documentaries involve extensive research. They include interviews, visuals, and narration that support the argument. Their purpose is to educate and explain. This is the basic and most common documentary mode. Observation documentaries are shot without any narration, commentary, and the viewer is left to interpret it in their own way. It is shot like a "fly on the wall" where the audience views the entire documentary without interruptions. Participatory documentaries have the filmmaker participating in the scenes or interviews while on screen. This includes an equal amount of capturing the interviewer and interviewee. Reflexive mode documentaries use interviews, narration, and visual metaphors to explore the relationship between the filmmaker and audience.
