Blog Post #19: Marketing Fashion Towards Different Age Groups

The main audience for fashion games is children. This can be seen in the marketing, coloring, and overall style of the games. I decided to research fashion games because it helps me understand how fashion marketing looks when it is directed towards different age groups. For example, older adults may pick up more minimalistic covers of fashion magazines while kids tend to download childish fashion games about dress up and make up.

These games are marketed specifically toward children through bright visuals and easy gameplay. Also, fashion games display current trends. Older games have clothing that is popular during the time period (Ex: first image). This is because kids are familiar with what they see around them and in media. The clothes in these games often resemble popular outfits worn by celebrities, influencers, or characters from movies and TV shows.

Fashion related products are often marketed to teenagers and young adults through games and social platforms they already use. One example is the popular Roblox game Dress to Impress. In this game, players create outfits based on a specific theme within a time limit. The themes are more detailed and complex than those in games made for younger children, which is why the game mainly attracts teenagers and young adults. Many of the themes are also based on current fashion trends and pop culture. Players often design outfits inspired by celebrities, movies, or award shows to impress others, gain recognition, and win the game.

The difference between the two age groups when it comes to fashion is children's products and media are fun, simple, and have age appropriate topics, designs, etc. Meanwhile, fashion towards teenagers and young adults is marketed more maturely and has interests that they like. For example, a teenager is not going to be interested in a Disney fashion game.
