Blog Post #13: Stereotypes (Negative)
Hair: Women are expected to have long hair because it reinforces traditional gender norms. Shorter haircuts or unconventional ones are seen as rebellious. Bright and uncommon hair colors are also seen as rebellious, and attention seeking. In some cultures, women are pressured to straighten their hair to fit into beauty standards.
Clothes: Clothes dictate a person's status. Expensive and trendy clothing make a person appear more put together, wealthy, important, and successful. People tend to be judgmental towards cheap or casual clothing. Society also dictates the status of women by the clothes they wear. They are either categorized as being feminine, manly, or revealing. This effects women, especially young adults and teenagers, because they have to find a perfect in between where they do not feel pressured or judged by society.Social media: Social media influencers often promote "perfect" version of their lives that leaves a huge impact on the audience. The audience is led to believe happiness and the perfect life comes from looking a certain way, owning certain products, or adopting life styles. Also, there is a negative stereotype that social media influencers are inauthentic, shallow, rich, and obsessed with themselves. The younger audience is pressured to look perfect, leading to insecurities, bad self esteem, and causing overconsumption.
Designer clothes: People who wear designer clothes can be seen in a positive or a negative light. They are viewed as wealthy, important, and successful. On the other hand, they can be stereotyped as being superficial and full of themselves.
Sustainable fashion: There is a stereotype that dressing more sustainable is for hippies. Recently, the trend of fast fashion has taken over because many prefer clothes to be cheap and trendy rather than investing in quality clothes.
These stereotypes will be addressed in my documentary. All of them have the common theme that they appear on social media and influence the audience. I will also research the positive effects stereotypes have.
