Blog Post #4: Meaning and Theme

 If my documentary is about what has impacted/influenced fashion, then there can be multiple meanings and themes. The main meaning will be that a person's self-expression comes from multiple factors. This means that whether someone creates clothing, or even just dresses a certain way, came from multiple influences such as music, social media, art, etc. Those influences are what my episodes of the documentary are about.


For example, social media's impact on fashion is seen everywhere. Here are ways it has impacted the fashion industry and culture:

  • Starts fashion trends - people such as fashion influencers and models can create fashion trends because they have such a big audience online.
  • Increase in fast fashion but also sustainable fashion - there has been an increase in people using fast fashion brands, but there is also a trend of sustainable fashion. This is because social media allows people to share tips on sewing, secondhand clothing, and things such as diy crafts.
  • There are overconsumption problems - influencers are paid to "advertise" products that are low quality just so the company can get money. The audience purchasing the product are impulsively buying something that is useless or will not last because of social media. Most likely a result of trends.
  • Brands are more likely to be successful and find an audience - smaller brands can gain an audience from social media quickly if they go viral.
  • Inspiration and discovery of style, fashion news, brands, etc. - it is easier than ever to find resources on social media for fashion related topics. There are many different creative ideas on social media that have influenced designs and trends.
  • More career paths in fashion such as fashion influencers - this opens up more opportunities for people job wise. This has a positive effect because it is similar to major global media conglomerates (less people in an industry means less diversity and creativity).

Blog Post #8: Preliminary Exercise

I used my cat as the posed actor for my video clips. Pan: The pan shot I used was to introduce the posed actor. It could be used as suspense to slowly begin to show the subject you are recording. It also allows the audience to see the background/environment that surrounds the actor. I could use this both on people (interviews) or when showing a wider view of a scene in my documentary.   Zoom: The zoom has a similar effect as the close up shot because it is showing my actor's expressions and close up details. It can also be used for the background/environment. It also makes the audience pay attention to a certain aspect you want because it is directing their attention to something. Close Up: A close up shot on actors is used to show their expressions and emotions. Because I used it on my cat, you could clearly see her expressions and the details of her face. This could be a good camera shot to use in a nature documentary to show close up details that you want the audience to notice....

Documentary M odes Expository documentaries involve extensive research. They include interviews, visuals, and narration that support the argument. Their purpose is to educate and explain. This is the basic and most common documentary mode. Observation documentaries are shot without any narration, commentary, and the viewer is left to interpret it in their own way. It is shot like a "fly on the wall" where the audience views the entire documentary without interruptions. Participatory documentaries have the filmmaker participating in the scenes or interviews while on screen. This includes an equal amount of capturing the interviewer and interviewee. Reflexive mode documentaries use interviews, narration, and visual metaphors to explore the relationship between the filmmaker and audience.
